Understanding the Track Saw

When you need a seriously straight cut, one with advanced accuracy and precision, when you need a tool to deliver smooth, seamless cuts and effortlessly smooth edges - look no further than a track saw. This saw is specifically built for perfect cutting accuracy in a more simple, more efficient design. With innovative features and technology, a track saw not only fills the shoes of traditional panel and circular saws, but bursts them at the seams. Especially designed for the accurate, precise, and quick cuts you won't get from any other product, the track saw is a titan among power cutting tools.

7 1 4 Saw

A track saw is a circular saw that runs on a track. This saw track, or guide, technology provides a built in straight edge to deliver the smoothest, finest cuts. The tool offers a wide range of cutting innovations; its plunge cut feature allows craftsmen to cut directly into the center (or off center) of materials, and is especially helpful in applications like cutting windows out of complete pieces. Some track saws feature a depth control gauge that allows users to set depth level to the thickness of their materials to prevent damaging any material below. For optimal precision and accuracy, some track saws also feature a variable speed option - and most saws work with a number of blade sizes. Setting a new standard in the world of cabinetry and basic contracting, the track saw is ideal for serious woodworkers. Rumblings have been heard of a Makita track saw emerging in Canada, but as yet the best track saws still come straight from their birthplace - Germany's Festool. DEWALT has also, as of November, 2008, released their new track saw, nipping at the heals of Festool's guarded innovation.

7 1 4 Saw

Over forty years ago Festool invented the plunge saw and guide rail system, otherwise known as the track saw. Throughout those forty years Festool has perfected that technology in their TS 55 and TS 75 EQ plunge cut circular saws. These tools are equip with an unchallenged guide rail system that exemplifies Festool's philosophy of innovation. The TS 55 sets a new standard for portable circular saws. Festool has refined the tool into something lighter, simpler to handle, and with more accuracy than ever before. The tool features Festool's FastFix blade change technology for easier, faster, and safer blade changes. It is also designed with a retractable spring-loaded riving knife that keeps wood separated as it passes through the saw for superior kickback prevention. Festool's plunge cut circular saw incorporates a supreme dust collection system for a cleaner, safer work space, and also triple motor bearings for maximum durability. The tool is powerful and smooth, strong and accurate, and incorporates the safety and stand-alone design Festool is known for.

The TS 55 has a 55 mm cutting depth providing nearly two inches of cutting capacity when used with the guide rail (on the rail the TS 55 has a straight down cut depth of 1 15/16 in (50 mm), and 1 7/16 in (37 mm) at 45 degrees - without the guide rail the saw has a straight down cut depth of 2 1/8 in (55 mm)). The tool's plunge action feature allows for more precise cut outs on wood surfaces and flooring. The saw, even with its size (9.92 lbs) and brute strength, is supremely accurate, and smoother than any in its class. The circular saw has a .787 in arbor size and a 0 - 45 degree bevel capacity. Festool's TS 55 plunge cut circular saw includes a 55 in (1,400 mm) guide rail and a 48-tooth high-quality carbide blade (6 ¼ in diameter, with a saw blade speed of 2,000 - 5,200 RPM). The saw also includes a limit stop, plug-it power cord, a splinterguard, and Festool's SYS 4 systainer. The TS 75 is an incredibly powerful plunge cut saw with Festool's famous pin-point accuracy. The saw can cut through material up to 2 ¾ in thick and leaves smooth edges that are both burn and splinter free - clean enough to glue without any further preparation. The powerful TS 75 can cut through solid doors like a devouring predator; its capable of truing the roughest lumber, and cutting out ornate window frames among many other applications. With this saw one can create exactly matching panels and save serious time by slicing stacked sheets of stock with only one cut. This saw is truly the creme de la creme of circular saws - experience one smooth, powerful cut with this tool and you're hooked.

The TS 75 has a 1.101 in arbor and a 0 - 45 degree bevel capacity. The saw weighs 13.6 lbs and includes a 75 in (1,900 mm) guide rail. The saw has a commanding 1,350 - 3,550 RPM blade speed and comes with 8 ¼ diameter blades in 48 and 36-tooth. On the guide rail the TS 75 has a straight down cut depth of 2 ¾ in (70 mm) and 2 1/8in (55 mm) cut depth at 45 degrees. Without the guide rail the saw has a 2 15/16 in (75 mm) straight down cut depth. The tool also includes Festool's limit stop, plug-it power cord, splipclutch, splinterguard, and SYS 5 systainer. The Festool TS 55 and TS 75 exemplify Festool's dedication to innovation and superiority. The tools are backed with Festool's unrivaled reputation of quality and design, and their three year (limited) warranty.

DEWALT power tools, a name well known in the tool industry has just developed and launched a new and unbelievable corded tack saw. Designed with cutting edge features and technology, DEWALT's new DWS520K track saw establishes itself as a brute force - a new titan in the tool industry. For an always flush cut, the track saw is designed with zero clearance, anti-splinter edges. The edges indicate the exact cut location producing a smoother, splinter free cut with advanced precision. The saw's dual edge track system provides perfectly straight cuts and moves easily, as if through butter, in both directions. DEWALT has incorporated a straight plunge mechanism; a non-pivoting, parallel link mechanism designed ergonomically for optimal operator comfort and control. To prevent blade binding and kickback while engaged, the saw is also designed with a continous anti-kickback system. This mechanism ensures an always safe, always smooth, accurate cut.

The new track saw runs with a 120v power supply (12A) and at 1,300 watts. This hi-power motor effortlessly cuts through hard wood up to 2-1/8 in thick. The saw runs at a no load speed of 1,750-4,000 RPM ensuring the power and capability serious woodworkers demand from their equipment. Additionally, the saw's flat blade guard technology provides a low profile blade guard enabling the operator increased accessibility in tight or confined spaces. DEWALT has also designed this saw with an amazing dust management system. Its 1-1/4" universal dust port provides a 90 percent dust extraction capability keeping job sites safer and freer of debris. Not to be outdone by any other track saw on the market, DEWALT has engineered this tool with a 47 degree bevel capacity. This extra 47 degree movement makes struggling through tight spots and corners, a thing of the past. The simple, fluid maneuverability of this saw makes it more versatile and more functional than any in its class. The saw holds a blade 165mm in diameter and comes with a 6-1/2", 48 tooth precision ground blade (20mm arbor), and a heavy duty kit box for security and convenience. This saw is more versatile, adaptable, and effecient than any circular saw or panel saw in its class. DEWALT offers one year free service on the new DWS520K corded track saw and a three year limited warranty.

7 Warlock Changes After Pre-Cataclysm Patch 4.0.1

The increased boosts to the Warlock are upon us, and it was evident when the 4.0.1 patch for Cataclysm surfaced. However, what you read in the patch notes is definitely different from what you experience in the game. We recently logged into our Warlock and wanted to pass along 7 changes we found.

7 1 4 Saw

1. Talent Trees Reset
You've probably already seen this, but the changes made are huge for the Warlock class. You can no longer add a little Affliction stats while running down the Destruction tree. In fact, when you choose a tree it's yours until 31 points are placed in it.

7 1 4 Saw

2. Glyph Changes
There are now 9 different glyphs available for your Warlock. While this is true, the Cataclysm 4.0.1 patch has made a few changes. You can now use a Prime glyph, Major glyph, and Minor glyph. The first set unlocked is at level 25, and then at level 50 as well as level 75.

3. Curses to Banes
Blizzard wanted to give every Warlock the ability to use a Bane and Curse at the same time, so the Curse of Agony is gone. It was replaced by the Bane of Agony, along with others as well (Bane of Havoc or Doom).

So if you want to place the Curse of Tongues or Weakness on your enemy, you're still able to add Bane of Agony, Havoc, or Doom into your rotation.

4. Demons
This is probably the biggest change to the various levels of a Warlock. When you want to use the Summon Demon ability, you no longer have to wait in order to get the demon you desire.

Keep in mind; when you start out at level 1 you already have an Imp, and your options will increase as you level. Just the other night we were roaming around Westfall leveling our Herbalism profession and saw a level 16 Warlock with a Fel Guard!

5. Soul Shards
Even though this sounds like a big deal, Cataclysm didn't really change much when it comes to soul shards. Sure, you will have 3 available shards at a time, but most locks never used them in combat, so the new "not being able to use them in combat" rule doesn't hurt anyone.

The area where this might be an issue is when making healthstones and soulstones. The best thing to do is ready over the Cataclysm notes for a better understanding.

6. Soul Harvest
This addition to the Warlock is huge, because it provides you with health abilities. You also replenish your soul shards as well. So instead of sitting there eating food or using a bandage, you can hit the Soul Harvest ability and replenish yourself.

7. Hellfire
Now, even though this hasn't officially changed, Cataclysm is supposed to provide a major change in the Hellfire ability. You currently need to use a Voidwalker and bubble yourself so you don't consume damage, but this is going to be taken out.

It's just something to consider with your upcoming rotation.

Even though each one of these offer new Warlock changes, there are many more to follow. We recommend reading over all the Cataclysm patch notes and getting a good feel for everything your toon has to endure. This will be extremely helpful when the new expansion is upon us.

Tungsten Carbide Hole Saws

In order to explain what a carbide tipped hole saw is, we must investigate the carbide compound. To give you a basic overview without too much scientific jargon, Carbide is a compound composed of carbon and a less electronegative element.

7 1 4 Saw

Some examples that you might have come across in the industry are Silicon Carbide, which is a covalent compound that is a useful abrasive. Tungsten carbide often called Carbide, is a compound specifically used for cutting tools. Carbides are important and are used to coat metals in cutting tools.

7 1 4 Saw

So the question that needs to be answered is, "when do we use these Carbide tipped hole saws?" Carbide tipped hole saws are commonly used when machining through materials such as steel or stainless steel. For a general rule of thumb, carbide tips are used in situations where other tools would struggle or wear away.

It's important to also note that Carbide tipped hole saws will leave a better finish on the material you are drilling and will also allow faster machining. Another positive is that carbide tipped tools can also withstand higher temperatures than standard high speed steel tools or parts.

Now that we've established the importance of the carbide tip lets discuss some of the features of the Carbide Tipped Hole Saw. For starters it can cut materials up to 5mm thick. The hole saw has carbide tipped cutting edges which we have discussed already. The slug is spring ejected when the cutting process is finished making it very easy and safe to use. Its versatility is also a great feature which can be used on portable and pillar drilling machines.

The applications are limited by your imagination. Here is a list of some of the common applications, stainless steel plate, copper plate, iron plate, brass plate, aluminum plate, alloy steel plate and channel iron.

Technology has come a long way, so if you're looking to get ahead of the game, make sure you ask for carbide tipped tools.

Track Saws - Reviewing the Guide Rail Systems of Festool, Makita, and Dewalt

Despite taking an idea as simple as a circular saw riding on a rail, the track saw or guide rail system is anything but simple. Reinventing and completely optimizing cutting accuracy, precision, and versatility, this cutting system is unlike any other and, accordingly, offers users some pretty robust advantages over other cutting systems.

7 1 4 Saw

The plunge-cut circular saw and guide rail system offers smooth pivoting action, minimized blade exposure, and the capacity to create precise cuts from any point on a panel (something ordinary saws could never do and should never attempt); this handful of innovations renders it one of the most versatile cutting tools in the industry. In fact, the system allows users to perform almost any cutting application from ripping sheet goods, cross-cutting, and creating straight edges in rough stock - to jointing boards and creating openings in panels and in sections of flooring, cabinets and doors. Essentially, the track saw is like the supersweet-hybrid result of a seriously awesome panel saw and the industry's best circular saw ever, and, although it's been enlightening users for almost half a century, the track saw remains one of the most exciting innovators in the production industry.

7 1 4 Saw

Developed by Germany's Festool around forty years ago, still, only a few manufacturers list a tack saw in their power tool line-ups; this, of course, leaves that monopoly (or, perhaps, triopoly) in the capable hands of Festool, Dewalt, and Makita. Determining which one of these track saws is better than the other, though, is not so easy as you might think - and although I'm partial to Festool to a fault (but not really "a fault" as Festool truly does no wrong, but I digress), the Makita and Dewalt models have their advantages too. Advantages, in fact, that make it increasingly difficult to ascertain a clear front-runner among the three manufacturers. In the interest of being honest, I believe the best track saws and the best rail guide systems still come from their birthplace - Festool, but let me lay down some info to help you discover your own track sawing soul mate:

Dewalt's DWS520SK is a 6.5" plunge-cut circular saw with a 59"guide. It's a zero-clearance cutting system for the straightest, most precise splinter-free cuts, and with an accurate on-track cut depth indicator (which accounts for the thickness of the track your using), users can easily hit precise cut depths (max cut: 2-1/8" at 90°, 1-5/8" at 45º). The saw additionally boasts a continuous anti-kickback mechanism and riving knife to reduce kickback while working, and with a smooth, low-profile blade guard, the saw is can also and easily be used is small or awkward spaces. The saw boasts a straight plunge mechanism for ergonomic comfort on the job, and with a 12A, 1300W motor with 1,750 - 4,000 RPM, the circ saw can chomp through hardwoods up to 2-1/8" thick. The thing is additionally equip with a universal 1-1/4" dust port which, when coupled with a vacuum, collects about 90% of the dust and debris produced while cutting.

The DWS520SK includes the saw and guide (of course), and a kit box, blade wrench, and a 48-tooth ultra-fine finishing blade. If you require a little more than 59" in the guide rail department, Dewalt also makes a 102" track. Their DWS520LK comes with that 102" track, and their DWS520CK includes both the 59" and 102" saw tracks. Of course, you may also purchase the tracks or other accessories for the saw and track separately.

Makita's SP6000K1 system is built around a 6.5" plunge-cut circular saw and 55" guide rail. The guide rail system and circ saw base are designed to interact with one another resulting in perfectly smooth, absolutely precise straight and bevel cuts, and because the tool's electronic speed control maintains constant speed under load, the saw delivers splinter free cuts with an honestly unbelievable finish. The saw additionally features variable speeds ranging from 2,000 - 5,000 RPM optimizing its overall versatility and providing the perfect options for each application. The thing also boasts a big-ol' cutting capacity of 2-3/16" at 90° and 1-9/16" at 45° and a bevel capability of -1° to 48° with positive stops at 22.5° and 45°. All this power and all these capabilities require a bit of precaution, accordingly, the saw also has a built-in current limiter to eliminate motor burnout and a soft start feature to ensure an always smooth performance.

Boasting magnesium components the SP6000K1 is lightweight, durable, and ultra well-balanced, and offering seriously close to the wall cutting, the saw offers extended applications. Also featuring a smooth plunge release for user comfort, and, perhaps one of the saw's very best features, dual front and rear bevel supports to hold the blade in position (so you don't have to), the thing provides incredibly smooth and dead-on accurate bevel cuts. For the sake of overall awesomeness, the saw also provides simple depth adjustment, a depth stop, super-fast blades changes, an electronic brake for your safety and productivity, a 1-7/16" rear dust port designed to push material away from the operator (and can also connect to a collection system), and a saw base that is compatible with competing guide rail systems.

And, before I really outstay my welcome with this tool, let me also say that Makita's saw is seriously comfortable to operate, includes a high-performance 48-tooth carbide tipped blade, a hex blade wrench, stackable tool case, and, of course, the saw and 55" guide rail. That saw and rail and, if you need something bigger, a 118" rail (part number 194367-7) can be purchased separately.

As for the Festool, I will try to keep my accolades and my word-count under control, but, as they do offer two choices, I think that merits at least a few more lines. To begin, Festool's 561174 TS 55 system is built around a law-defying 6.25" circular saw and a 55" guide rail. The circ saw itself is lightweight, simple to maneuver, and offers the kind of accuracy that makes traditional circular saws feel bad about themselves. The saw's dust mechanism is designed to direct dust and debris away from the tool, operator, and projects and may also be connected to Festool's unbeatable, tool-triggered dust collection system, and with the FastFix blade system, blade changes are both faster and simpler to perform. The tool's sophisticated electronics maintain speed under load and offer variable speeds from 2,000 - 5,200 RPM ensuring you can match the tool's performance to each material and application - of course, these electronics also protect the tool from current and thermal overload.

The TS 55 additionally offers simple and accurate depth adjustments allowing users to expose only the necessary portions of the blade, and with a smooth plunge action for interior cuts and a spring-loaded, retractable riving knife reducing kickback and improving controlability, the saw delivers unmatched results in overall smoothness, precision, and simplicity. The saw produces a gorgeous finish, in fact, a splinter-free finish on both sides of the cut saving you time and material and, altogether, the system includes the saw, 55" guide rail, a 48-tooth carbide blade, limit stop, plug-it power cord, splinterguard, and one of Festool's well known systainers (the stackable, interlocking case).

As for the bigger saw, Festool's 561188 TS 75 shares the TS 55's best features, you know, like mind-bending accuracy, precision and smoothness of cut, variable speeds, overload protection, the FastFix blade system, riving knife, and etc - but, as Festool's most powerful plunge cut saw, the TS 75 8.25" circular saw takes the concept of high-performance to another level breaking all existing molds for precision power and high-performance. In fact, even with the capacity to cut material up to 2-3/4" thick (which also allows users to stack sheet goods for multiple identical simultaneous cuts), the saw still manages to leave a splinter-free, silky smooth, and burn-free cutting edge. It's amazing. The TS 75 additionally includes a 75" guide rail, limit stop, plug-it power cord, 36-tooth blade, slipclutch, splinterguard, and that smart systainer. Festool additionally offers tons of guide rails (up to 197") and other accessories to spice up your system.

Power Tool Buying Guide For Circular Saw

A circular saw is a great tool and one of the most common tools in the workshop. It was invented in England back in 1780. The circular saw is also known as a buzz saw or commonly called the Skil saw, even though Skil is a manufacturer that makes circular saws. With the right blade, a circular saw is capable of cutting wood, steel, masonry and ceramic tile. Circular saws come in different sizes ranging from 3" to 16". The most common corded size is 7 1/4" and cordless is 5 3/8" & 6 1/2". There are two types of circular saws: IN-Line Saws and Worm Drive Saws.

7 1 4 Saw

In-Line Saw - These are the most common types of circular saws and tend to be the least expensive. In addition, they don't weigh as much as the Worm Drive saws. An In-line saw's motor sits perpendicular to the blade and a shaft runs directly from the motor to drive the blade. An In-Line saw will suit most of your applications, and except for changing the blades, they are maintenance free.

7 1 4 Saw

Worm Drive Saw - A worm drive is for heavy duty use and tends to cost a little more than the In-Line saws. A worm drive motor is positioned parallel with the blade and uses a gear to increase the torque transferred to the blade. These tend to be a little heavier than the in-line models. Also, worm saws are not maintenance free, you will need to occasionally add a special oil to the motor, which is nothing more than unscrewing a screw and adding the oil, it is very easy.

Circular Saw Features

Electric Brakes - This is one feature I would get, no questions asked. An electric brake stops the motor in about two seconds after releasing the trigger, while a saw without an electric brake will take about 10 to 15 seconds to stop. The electric brake works by reversing the flow of electricity to the saw motor. The reason to go with the electric brake, which most models now offer, is to save limbs and fingers. After you are cutting for a while your arm will tend to get tired, so you want to make sure your safe at all times. Stopping the blade quicker means less chances of getting hurt.

Blade Capacity - As noted above circular saws come in different blade sizes. If you are buying a corded model I would go with a 7 1/4" and for cordless, go with a 6 1/2". The larger blade models are heavier, but in the long run you will have to make less cuts, especially on angle cuts.

Shaft Locks - Make sure your saw has a lock. A Shaft lock is usually a button you press that holds the blade still, making changing the blade easier. If your buying a professional power circular saw, it should have this feature. The cheaper models usually do not have this feature.

Circular Saw Blades

A saw blade is one of the most important parts to a circular saw. Not only having the right blade is important, but also having a sharp blade is important. There are numerous blades for different jobs and below we cover the common uses. If you would like a more in depth explanation on saw blades please follow this link - Blades.

Steel Blades - Inexpensive and good for softwood. Hardwood will make steel blades dull very quickly.

Carbide Blades - Will stay sharp longer than steel blades, but more expensive.

Tile Blades - Usually have diamond tip blades and are designed especially for cutting ceramic tile.

Masonry Blades - These blades are made for cutting concrete, brick, cinder block and other masonry material. They are made of abrasive material.

What to look for when buying a circular saw

I would definitely look for a circular saw that accepts 7 1/4 blades. These are the most common blades; therefore making it easier to buy blades down the road. Also I would look for a saw with a long cord, as you would be surprised how many cords are very short. You can always add an extension cord on, but I would look for a cord that is at least 8 feet in length. Another primary item to look for is an adjustable base plate. This is good for making angle cuts and sometimes comes in very handy.

Cordless Saws - Cordless saws are nice because they have no cords to plug in, trip over or even cut through. However, they lack power. The blades tend to be smaller and therefore they do not cut as quick. Since it takes a lot of power to cut through wood, you will definitely need more than one battery as you will be recharging them often.

Corded Saws - Corded saws are more powerful, but also heavier. If you are going to be cutting a lot of wood, grab the corded model as it will save you aggravation down the road.

I currently own a cordless and corded one. I find myself using both models just about the same. It is just easier to grab the cordless one and start cutting. Most of the carpenters I know or have talked to also own both styles.

Tips on using a Circular Saw

Make sure you have the right blade for the type of material you are cutting.

Blades - Make sure your blade is sharp and not dull. Dull blades tend to heat up more which causes more wear on your tools and more chances to bind.

Set the cutting depth no more than a 1/4 inch thickness of the wood to be cut. This will help reduce the chances of kick backs.

Clamp the wood you will be cutting. This will insure a more accurate cut.

Make sure your wood is clean of nails.

Make sure your saw is up to speed before you start cutting the wood.

Don't force your saw to cut. Let the saw cut by pushing slightly into the wood and letting the saw cut.

Make sure the blade stops before you grab the wood.

A Brief Profile of the Makita Circular Saw Lineup

One of the most surprising aspects of the Makita circular saw, has to be just how many different types they produce. Now for the sake of simplicity this article is only going to touch on "some" of the non cordless models in their inventory. Saws that run on AC electrical current out of a wall plug.

7 1 4 Saw

I'm not being lazy either because would you believe that they list a total of 16 different types of saws in the AC category? So now you're probably thinking that this is "production line overkill". After all, how many different types of saws are really needed?

7 1 4 Saw

What About Cutting Masonry?

What about a masonry saw? Makita has a durable 5 inch model that packs a powerful 7.9 amp motor to slice right through brick, stone and concrete. One very thoughtful safety feature on this handy unit that's of course used around water, is a GFI breaker that's permanently attached to the end of the plug.

Talk About a Light Wormdrive 7 1/4!

While all the other tool makers have been trying to figure out how to lighten their "affordable" standard 7 1/4 wormdrives, Makita has beat them all to the punch with their amazing 13.2 pound Magnesium Hypoid saw. They shed its weight, by converting to magnesium components. By the way they also have 10.6 pound mag saw.

Finally A Much Safer Beam Saw

The 16 5/8 Makita circular saw definitely takes the danger factor out of cutting thick beams. Face the facts; older style monster saws of this type are downright scary! So whats so different about this beast? How about a state of the art electric blade brake for quick stops and a more powerful 2,200 rpm motor for less risk of cut binding. At 32.1 pounds, it's also lighter too.

Is 6.2 Pounds Light Enough for You?

If you're really looking to shed some weight, the lightest of all Makita circular saw models for cutting wood, is their 6.2 pound 5 1/2 inch "sidewinder". Don't kid yourself either because this unit cuts 1 3/4, which is plenty deep to get through a 2x4. It's 8 amp motor also packs all the power you'll need. It's perfect for framing and pickup!

The Precision Plunge Style Makita Circular Saw

For clean, precision chip free cuts, Makita has two plunge saws in their lineup and they're both 6 ¼ inches. One comes with a mammoth 55" guide rail, and the smaller model has a standard sized deluxe style table. They're both also packed with wizz-bang features like multi operational blade speed control for both setting and maintaining blade speed.
